From breaking rocks to breaking the cycle
Around 1 in 4 children are thrown into raw, manual labour - like breaking rocks and working in tea plantations. Rock breaking is done by hand - it is unimaginably hard work breaking down material into what will ultimately be sold as road base. And the young tea pickers have an equally tough time, carting 20 kilos bags of leaves on their heads. For us, it’s about breaking this cycle by raising funds that can provide these children with an education.
HOI fully fund 6 schools in the local region. We’re proud that we were able to generate a 28% increase in the number of students in 2019 over the previous year, with 488 girls and 439 boys taking up places at our schools. We’ve also managed to maintain a 90% retention rate of schoolteachers and NGO administrators since 2009.
In 2023 HOI committed to funding 5 nursing scholarships annually. This is a new and exciting program allowing selected village women to undertake a three year nursing degree.
